Hotels by city
Flying in before a cruise or planning a few days in Texas? Here are the hotels I look at first in each city, with the area and why I'd stay there. Ask me about perks for your dates.
- MiamiBrickell and downtown stays close to PortMiami, plus an oceanfront pick for after the cruise.
- Fort LauderdaleIntracoastal and beachfront stays for the night before or after a Port Everglades sailing.
- GalvestonStrand and Pier 21 hotels near the port, plus Seawall beachfront stays for after the cruise.
- Port Canaveral & OrlandoPort-side, Cocoa Beach and Orlando airport hotels for a Port Canaveral sailing.
- AustinLady Bird Lake, downtown, South Congress and Rainey Street picks for a Texas city break.
How booking a hotel with me works
- Tell me about your trip. Where, when, who's coming, and what matters most: the beach, the pool, the food, quiet, space for the kids, or an easy ride to the cruise port.
- I come back with a short list. A few hotels that fit, with why each one makes sense for you, and any perks that apply to your dates.
- I book it and keep an eye on it. I handle the details with the hotel, including special requests like connecting rooms or a celebration note, and I'm here if anything changes before or during your stay.
What it costs you: there are no Book with the Captain fees and no markup on hotel bookings. In most cases you pay the same rate you'd see booking directly with the hotel; member-only or app rates can differ. Fora describes its preferred partner perks as coming "at the same price as booking direct." Hotels pay advisors a commission, so my help doesn't add to your price. I may earn a commission from the hotel when you book, at no extra cost to you.
Any price I quote will include the hotel's mandatory resort or destination fees, so there are no surprises.
Hotel perk programs I can book
Many luxury hotel brands run programs for a select group of travel agencies. When a stay is booked through one of these programs, guests can get extra perks that usually aren't available when booking on your own. Fora's public site says its advisors can book programs like these:
- Four Seasons Preferred Partner: Four Seasons hotels and resorts. Invitation-only, per Fora.
- Rosewood Elite: Rosewood hotels. Invitation-only, per Fora.
- Belmond Bellini Club: Belmond hotels and trains.
- Mandarin Oriental Fan Club: Mandarin Oriental hotels. Invitation-only, per Fora.
- Marriott STARS & Luminous: STARS covers luxury brands such as The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, The Luxury Collection and EDITION. Luminous covers W Hotels, JW Marriott, Autograph Collection and selected properties from other Marriott brands.
- Hyatt Privé: selected Hyatt properties, including brands like Park Hyatt, Andaz, Grand Hyatt and Thompson Hotels.
- Hilton for Luxury (Hilton's luxury program for travel agencies): selected Hilton luxury properties.
- IHG Destined: participating IHG hotels around the world.
- Accor Preferred: brands including Fairmont, Sofitel, Raffles and SLS.
- The Peninsula PenClub: all Peninsula hotels, from Manila to Chicago.
- Dorchester Diamond Club: Dorchester Collection hotels. Invitation-only, per Fora.
- Shangri-La Luxury Circle: participating Shangri-La properties.
Fora also says its advisors can book with preferred partners in Fora Reserve, its own network of more than 5,000 hotels, cruise lines and other travel partners, from independent boutique hotels to big luxury brands.
What the perks usually look like: perks such as daily breakfast, a hotel credit, a room upgrade when one's available, and early check-in or late checkout when possible. Some hotels add a welcome amenity. Perks vary by hotel and program, and they aren't guaranteed. I'll tell you exactly what applies to your stay before you book.
Program names belong to their owners. Book with the Captain is an independent travel advisor with Fora Travel and isn't an official partner of, or endorsed by, any hotel brand.
Hotel vacation ideas
1. The night before your Florida cruise
Flying in the day before takes the stress out of sailing day. Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale says it's the only U.S. port right next to an airport, and that many area hotels run transfers to the port. Port Canaveral says Orlando International Airport is about 45 minutes west, so a night near the beach or the airport both work. I compare the options in Hotels near PortMiami or Port Canaveral before a cruise and Why arrive a day early for your cruise.
2. A Galveston or Houston night before a Texas cruise
If you're sailing from Galveston, you can stay on the island near the port or near a Houston airport if you land late. My Icon of the Seas from Galveston guide walks through both.
3. Add a beach resort to your cruise, or skip the ship this time
Turks & Caicos, the Bahamas and Grand Cayman are favorite resort escapes. Fora's public pages list Aman resorts in Turks & Caicos and the Dominican Republic, and boutique stays like Palm Heights on Grand Cayman's Seven Mile Beach. If you've loved a port day somewhere like Nassau, St. Thomas or Cozumel, a resort stay lets you go back with more time. Start with Turks & Caicos and Bahamas luxury resorts.
4. Family resorts with room to spread out
For families, the room setup matters as much as the pool. I look for connecting rooms, suites and kid-friendly dining. I look for hotels and programs that can help with connecting rooms, though it's never guaranteed. Pairing a resort with a family cruise? See Spring break 2027 family cruises from Florida.
5. Honeymoons, anniversaries and "just us" trips
Tell me it's a celebration and I'll note it on your booking. Many perk programs include extras like a welcome amenity and an upgrade when one's available. Island resorts, Mexico's beaches and quiet adults-friendly hotels are all on the table.
6. City breaks before or after a sailing
Some voyages start or end in big cities, which makes a hotel stay part of the trip. Victory Cruise Lines lists Great Lakes voyages between Toronto and Chicago, and The Peninsula has a Chicago hotel in its PenClub program. See Great Lakes cruises 2027.
7. National park lodges
Staying inside a park puts you close to the sights at sunrise. In Yellowstone, the National Park Service says all in-park lodging is run by its authorized concessioner, from historic hotels like the Old Faithful Inn to cabins, and that rooms fill quickly, so book early.
8. Alaska: a cruise plus Denali
Ending your Alaska cruise in Seward or Whittier? The Alaska Railroad offers land packages that add hotel nights in Anchorage and Denali, with rail travel and a Denali National Park tour. Before you sail, read my Juneau port guide, which covers Mount Roberts and more.
9. Wellness and slow luxury
Spa-focused resorts, mountain hideaways and quiet countryside hotels for a real reset. Fora lists brands like Aman and Auberge Collection among the hotels its advisors book with perks.
