Not long ago, a Great Lakes cruise was a niche idea. Today it's one of the fastest-growing small-ship regions in North America. In 2026, cruise tourism brought a record $310m in economic impact to Great Lakes destinations, with 25,000 passengers (up 5% from 2025) and 880 port calls, according to Seatrade Cruise News. Cruise the Great Lakes reported that almost 95% of all itineraries sold out.

I'm Captain Sail, the guide for Book with the Captain, an independent travel advisor affiliated with Fora Travel. If you're thinking about a Great Lakes cruise in 2027, this guide covers the lines and ships, the ports you'll visit, how to choose the right itinerary, and where to stay before and after your voyage.

Why cruise the Great Lakes?

The Great Lakes offer something few cruise regions can: big-city skylines, car-free islands, historic locks, national parks and two countries, all on calm freshwater. Ships here are small, so you'll dock right in town and spend less time waiting in lines. Highlights include:

Sample 2027 itineraries from official line sites

Itineraries change and can vary by departure, so I always confirm details before you book. Here's what each line's official site shows for 2027.

Viking

Viking's Niagara & the Great Lakes is an 8-day voyage from Toronto to Milwaukee, with stops at the Welland Canal and Niagara Falls (Port Colborne), Point Pelee, Detroit, Alpena and Mackinac Island. Viking also lists a Great Lakes Explorer voyage between Milwaukee and Thunder Bay, Ontario. These are expedition ships, with kayaks, Zodiacs and Special Operations Boats included for exploring.

American Cruise Lines

American Cruise Lines' American Great Lakes Cruise is a 14-day, 13-night journey between Buffalo and Milwaukee, with a reverse itinerary available. Ports include Toledo, Detroit, Alpena, Sault Ste. Marie, Mackinac Island, Muskegon and Holland. Its ship, American Patriot, was built in 2025 and carries 130 guests, and every stateroom has a private balcony. The line also lists Lake Michigan & Upper Peninsula and Great Lakes & Thousand Islands cruises for 2027. Seatrade notes the line has introduced itineraries with all U.S. ports.

Victory Cruise Lines

Victory's 2027 voyage calendar shows 10-night cruise-and-hotel voyages between Toronto and Chicago on Victory I and Victory II, plus longer sailings that add the St. Lawrence Seaway, such as Chicago to Quebec City or Montreal. Its All Five Great Lakes voyages visit all five lakes, and Victory II carries 190 guests.

Pearl Seas Cruises

Pearl Seas' 7-Night Great Lakes & Georgian Bay sails Pearl Mist between Milwaukee and Toronto, calling at Muskegon/Holland, Mackinac Island, Sault Ste. Marie, Little Current, Parry Sound and Midland, with a reverse itinerary available. An 11-night version adds Cleveland and Detroit.

Ponant, Hapag-Lloyd and St. Lawrence Cruise Lines

These lines also sailed the Great Lakes in 2026. Ask me and I'll check their 2027 schedules for your dates.

Great Lakes ports to know

Detroit, Michigan

Detroit had a record season in 2026, with 70 cruise ship visits, and its port is now managing three docks, according to Seatrade. Highlights on official itineraries include The Henry Ford museum and the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

A car-free island where you explore by carriage, bicycle or on foot. It's on nearly every Great Lakes itinerary.

Sault Ste. Marie

Home to the Soo Locks, where freighters move between Lake Superior and Lake Huron.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

A common embarkation and disembarkation port. Pearl Seas notes that the Milwaukee Art Museum is just steps away from its dock, and Seatrade reports Milwaukee is nearing completion of its South Shore Dock.

Toronto, Ontario

A major starting and ending point for many voyages, with a diverse food scene and the historic Distillery District.

Chicago, Illinois

The western gateway for Victory's Toronto–Chicago voyages.

Georgian Bay and Niagara

Georgian Bay ports like Parry Sound, Midland and Little Current bring wilderness and island scenery, while Niagara Falls (Port Colborne) is a highlight on itineraries that cross the Welland Canal.

How to choose your Great Lakes cruise

Pick your style of ship

Choose your route

Think about length

Itineraries range from about a week to two weeks or more. Shorter voyages suit first-timers; longer ones let you add the St. Lawrence Seaway or more ports.

Check what's included

Inclusions vary. Some lines include a hotel night or excursions, and some include more onboard. I'll line up what each fare includes so you can compare fairly.

Accessibility

Small ships can differ a lot in elevators, tender use and walking distances in port. If you or someone in your group uses a wheelchair or mobility aid, tell me early, and I'll check ship features and shore excursions before you book.

Book early

With almost 95% of 2026 itineraries sold out, according to Cruise the Great Lakes, it pays to plan ahead for 2027.

Pre- and post-cruise hotels

Most Great Lakes voyages start or end in a big city, so a night before is a smart move. My guide on why to arrive a day early for your cruise explains why. Some lines include a hotel stay, so check your voyage first. Here's how I think about areas in each city.

Detroit

Downtown and the riverfront put you close to the docks and to sports, dining and the Detroit RiverWalk. Midtown is a good pick if museums like the Detroit Institute of Arts are on your list.

Chicago

The Loop and River North are central, with easy access to the lakefront, architecture tours and dining. Streeterville, near Navy Pier, keeps you close to the lake and the Magnificent Mile.

Toronto

The Harbourfront and downtown core keep you near the waterfront and major sights. The Distillery District and nearby neighborhoods offer character, dining and walkable streets.

Milwaukee

Downtown and the Historic Third Ward are walkable, with dining, shopping and the RiverWalk. Staying near the lakefront keeps you close to the Milwaukee Art Museum.

I'll suggest specific hotels based on your voyage, flights and travel style.
