Ahoy! I'm Captain Sail, the guide for Book with the Captain, an independent travel advisor of Fora Travel. Royal Caribbean sorts its ships into classes, and the class tells you more about your vacation than the ship's name does: size, the big attractions and the kind of trip. This hub walks through all seven classes, notes the 2027 home ports Royal Caribbean names, and links to my detailed guides.

  • Florida: Icon Class ships sail from Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral in 2027, and Oasis Class Wonder sails from Miami.

Captain's tip: Start with your drive-to port and trip length, then pick the class. The right class from the wrong port means flights you didn't need.

Icon Class

Ships: Icon, Star, Legend and Hero of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean calls Icon Class its newest class and says it has the largest waterpark at sea, aimed at the ultimate family vacation. The ships are built around neighborhoods like Thrill Island and Surfside.

Oasis Class

Ships: Oasis, Allure, Harmony, Symphony, Wonder and Utopia of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean describes Oasis Class as some of the largest cruise ships in the world, with "epic neighborhoods" and the AquaTheater. For 2027, Royal Caribbean names Wonder for 3- to 4-night Bahamas trips from Miami and Symphony for 6- to 8-night trips from Galveston. Other Oasis Class home ports vary by season.

Quantum Class

Ships: Quantum, Anthem, Ovation, Odyssey and Spectrum of the Seas (Spectrum is "Quantum Ultra Class").

Royal Caribbean highlights North Star, skydiving at sea, SeaPlex bumper cars and robotic bartenders. Home ports vary by season worldwide, so ask us where they sail for your dates.

Freedom Class

Ships: Freedom, Independence and Liberty of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean mentions high-speed slides on Freedom and a boomerang slide on Liberty. Royal Caribbean's Texas page lists Liberty for 4- to 5-night trips from Galveston starting in 2027. Home ports for Freedom and Independence vary by season.

Voyager Class

Ships: Voyager, Explorer, Adventure, Navigator and Mariner of the Seas.

Mid-size ships with big-ship attractions. Royal Caribbean lists the longest waterslide at sea on Navigator, and surf sessions and racing slides on Mariner. Home ports vary by season, so ask us which one sails near you.

Radiance Class

Ships: Radiance, Brilliance, Serenade and Jewel of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean describes "walls of glass" and panoramic ocean views, and Brilliance has a rotating bar. Home ports vary by season.

Vision Class

Ships: Vision, Rhapsody, Grandeur and Enchantment of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean calls these ships "intimate, destination-focused," with a smaller scale. Enchantment has an adults-only Solarium. Home ports vary by season.

Good to know: Bigger isn't always better. Smaller ships trade some big attractions for a quieter, port-focused trip, while bigger ships pack in more on board. Tell me what matters and I'll match the class.

2027 ship moves and port guides

The biggest change in 2027: Icon of the Seas moves from Miami to Galveston, and Hero of the Seas arrives in Miami. Royal Caribbean's pages differ on the exact timing, so confirm dates with us. My 2027 ship moves guide has the port-by-port picture, and my Galveston cruise planner covers Texas.

In 2027, Icon Class ships sail from Galveston, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral, according to Royal Caribbean's website.

Which Royal Caribbean ship class is best for a first cruise?

It depends on your time and port. For a short trip, Royal Caribbean says Oasis Class Wonder of the Seas sails 3- to 4-night Bahamas cruises from Miami in 2027. For a full week with the most to do, Icon Class ships like Star and Hero sail 7-night trips.

Which Royal Caribbean ships sail from Galveston in 2027?

Royal Caribbean's Texas page says that starting in 2027, Icon of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas all sail from Galveston on four- to eight-night trips. My Galveston guides cover the details, and I confirm your exact ship and dates before you book.

Are smaller Royal Caribbean ships worth considering?

Yes, for some travelers. Royal Caribbean describes Vision Class ships as intimate and destination-focused, and Radiance Class ships have walls of glass for ocean views. Their home ports vary by season, so ask us where they sail; they suit travelers who want calmer decks.
