Cozumel Cruise Port Guide

Mexico's busiest cruise port is an island off the Yucatán coast known for clear water, reef snorkeling and a relaxed downtown. Here's how to make the most of a day ashore.

Where ships dock and getting to town

Cozumel has three cruise piers, and which one your ship uses shapes your day. Your cruise line assigns the pier, and it can change from one sailing to the next. Check your ship's daily planner the night before.

Taxis wait at every pier. They aren't metered. Fares are set by zone, posted at the terminal and charged per car rather than per person, so confirm the fare before you get in. On busy multi-ship days the taxi line back to the pier can be long, so leave yourself extra time.

Top things to do

Snorkel or dive the reefs

Cozumel is surrounded by the Mesoamerican Reef system and is one of the best-known dive destinations in the Caribbean. Much of the reef on the southern and western coast is protected within Cozumel Reefs National Park. Even if you don't dive, a guided snorkel boat tour is the classic Cozumel experience. Choose operators that follow park rules, and use reef-safe sunscreen.

Explore San Miguel

The downtown waterfront, or malecón, and the streets around the main plaza are lined with shops, cafés and silver and craft stores. Walk a few blocks back from the seafront road for quieter streets and more local spots.

Maya history

San Gervasio, in the island's interior, is Cozumel's main Maya archaeological site. It was a pilgrimage center dedicated to the goddess Ixchel. It's a peaceful, shaded visit that combines well with a beach afternoon.

The wild east coast

The island's windward side is mostly undeveloped, with dramatic surf, rocky coves and a handful of beach bars. Strong currents often make it unsafe for swimming, but the scenic drive is a favorite for travelers who rent a car or book a jeep tour.

Beaches and excursion ideas

Food to try

Try fresh fish tacos, ceviche and Yucatecan specialties such as cochinita pibil (slow-roasted, citrus-marinated pork) and sopa de lima. Finish with a fresh-fruit agua fresca or a michelada. Taco spots a few streets inland from the waterfront tend to be more local than the restaurants right by the piers.

Practical tips

Best time to visit

December through April brings the driest, most comfortable weather. It's also peak season, with several ships in port on many days. Summer and early fall are hotter and more humid. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk usually from August to October, and storms occasionally force itinerary changes. Seaweed (sargassum) levels vary by season and coast, but the western side, where the piers and beach clubs are, is usually more sheltered.

Docking, transport and attraction details change. Check your cruise line's port information and the ship's daily planner before you go ashore.

Frequently asked questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Cozumel?

Cozumel has three cruise piers, and which one your ship uses shapes your day. Your cruise line assigns the pier, and it can change from one sailing to the next. Check your ship's daily planner the night before. Check your cruise line's port information for your exact pier, since berths can change by sailing.

Can you plan a cruise that stops in Cozumel?

Yes. Tell me your travel dates, who's traveling and how long you'd like to sail, and I'll look for cruises that call at Cozumel and fit your plans. I reply personally within 1 business day, and there are no Book with the Captain fees and no markup on cruise bookings.

Should I book Cozumel shore excursions through the cruise line?

It depends on your plans. Cruise line excursions are coordinated with the ship's schedule, which can help if timing is tight. Exploring Cozumel on your own can mean more flexibility. Either way, plan to be back on board well before all-aboard time, because ships generally won't wait for late passengers.

Can you book a hotel before or after my cruise?

Yes. I book pre- and post-cruise hotel nights near departure ports, as well as stand-alone stays. There are no Book with the Captain fees and no markup on hotel bookings: you pay the hotel's rate. Tick 'Cruise + hotel' on the quote form and I'll compare available rates and perks for your dates.
