Juneau Cruise Port Guide

Alaska's capital can't be reached by road from the rest of North America, but ships dock right at its walkable downtown. It's the gateway to Mendenhall Glacier and some of Southeast Alaska's best whale watching.

Where ships dock and getting to town

Most ships berth at one of several downtown docks along South Franklin Street and Marine Way, including the Alaska Steamship Dock, the Cruise Ship Terminal and the Franklin Dock. From there, shops, the visitor center and excursion meeting points are a short walk. The AJ Dock is about a mile south of downtown. It's an easy, flat waterfront walk, or you can take a shuttle that runs while ships are in port. If all the berths are full, a ship may tender guests to the downtown waterfront.

Most excursion operators meet guests near the downtown docks and the base of the Mount Roberts tram, so it's easy to find your tour.

Top things to do

Mendenhall Glacier

About 12–13 miles from downtown, Mendenhall Glacier is the area's signature sight. It sits in the Tongass National Forest. From the visitor center, short trails lead to viewpoints, and the Nugget Falls trail takes you to a waterfall beside the glacier's lake. Getting there means a tour, a private shuttle or a taxi. The city bus stops about a mile and a half from the visitor center, so it's slow for a port day.

Whale watching

Humpback whales feed in the waters near Juneau through the summer, and Auke Bay is the usual departure point for whale-watching boats. Many tours combine a whale cruise with a glacier stop.

Mount Roberts

The Goldbelt Tram usually carries visitors from the waterfront up Mount Roberts to trails, viewpoints and Alaska Native cultural exhibits. Its aerial service was paused in 2026 after an incident. The lower terminal stayed open for local art, coffee and cultural demonstrations, so check current status before you plan around the ride. Fit hikers can also reach the mountain on the Mount Roberts Trail from town.

Downtown and history

The compact downtown has the Alaska State Museum, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, the State Capitol, galleries selling Alaska Native art, and the famously rustic Red Dog Saloon. Gold-mining history tours visit the remains of the area's historic mines.

Excursion ideas

Food to try

Wild Alaska salmon (king, sockeye and coho), halibut, and king crab legs are the stars. Crab shacks near the docks are a local favorite. Also look for reindeer sausage, smoked salmon to take home, and local craft beer and spruce-tip brews.

Practical tips

Best time to visit

The cruise season runs from about April or May into early October. June and July bring the longest days and often the driest spells. July and August are peak whale season and the busiest time in port. May and September can mean fewer crowds and, in September, fall color. Daylight is long throughout the summer.

Docking, transport and attraction details change. Check your cruise line's port information and the ship's daily planner before you go ashore.

Frequently asked questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Juneau?

Most ships berth at one of several downtown docks along South Franklin Street and Marine Way, including the Alaska Steamship Dock, the Cruise Ship Terminal and the Franklin Dock. From there, shops, the visitor center and excursion meeting points are a short walk. The AJ Dock is about a mile south of downtown.

Can you plan a cruise that stops in Juneau?

Yes. Tell me your travel dates, who's traveling and how long you'd like to sail, and I'll look for cruises that call at Juneau and fit your plans. I reply personally within 1 business day, and there are no Book with the Captain fees and no markup on cruise bookings.

Should I book Juneau shore excursions through the cruise line?

It depends on your plans. Cruise line excursions are coordinated with the ship's schedule, which can help if timing is tight. Exploring Juneau on your own can mean more flexibility. Either way, plan to be back on board well before all-aboard time, because ships generally won't wait for late passengers.

Can you book a hotel before or after my cruise?

Yes. I book pre- and post-cruise hotel nights near departure ports, as well as stand-alone stays. There are no Book with the Captain fees and no markup on hotel bookings: you pay the hotel's rate. Tick 'Cruise + hotel' on the quote form and I'll compare available rates and perks for your dates.
