Hotels Near PortMiami or Port Canaveral Before a Cruise

Downtown Miami or Miami Beach? Cocoa Beach or an Orlando airport hotel? Here's how I help you pick the right pre-cruise hotel in Florida.

Florida is home to some of the busiest cruise ports in the world, and two of the most popular are PortMiami and Port Canaveral. If you're flying in, I always recommend arriving the day before (here's why arriving a day early matters). The next question is: where should you stay?

I'm Captain Sail, the guide for Book with the Captain, an independent travel advisor affiliated with Fora Travel. I plan the whole trip, including the hotel night, the transfer and any excursions. Here's how I think about pre-cruise hotels near these two ports, without naming specific prices, because rates change constantly and depend on your dates.

First, decide what you want from your hotel night

Before picking a neighborhood, answer three questions:

  1. What time does your flight land? A late arrival points to an airport hotel. An early arrival opens up more options.
  2. Do you want a mini-vacation or just a bed? A beach or city stay feels like an extra vacation day. A port-adjacent hotel keeps things simple.
  3. Who's traveling? Families may want a pool and connecting rooms. Couples may want a great dinner nearby. Groups may want everyone under one roof.

Hotels near PortMiami

PortMiami sits on an island in Biscayne Bay, connected to downtown Miami. That makes it one of the easiest big cruise ports to reach from a city hotel.

Downtown Miami and Brickell

Best for: short transfers, city energy and dining.

Downtown and nearby Brickell are close to the port, so embarkation morning is usually a short ride. You'll find a wide range of hotels, from business-style high-rises to more design-forward stays, many with bay views. It's a good pick if you want restaurants and rooftop views without a long drive.

Miami Beach

Best for: a beach day before your cruise.

If you'd like your extra day to feel like vacation, Miami Beach offers oceanfront hotels, pools and walkable areas. The trade-off is a longer, sometimes traffic-dependent transfer to the port, so I plan timing carefully.

Near Miami International Airport (MIA)

Best for: late-night arrivals and simple logistics.

Airport-area hotels are practical if you land late and just want to sleep. They're less scenic, but they keep the night easy. Many travelers then take a rideshare, taxi or private transfer to the port in the morning.

Fort Lauderdale as an alternative

Some travelers fly into Fort Lauderdale. If that's you, I'll weigh whether it makes more sense to stay near that airport or closer to Miami, based on your flight and boarding time.

Hotels near Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral is on Florida's Space Coast, east of Orlando. Most cruisers fly into Orlando International Airport (MCO) and then drive or transfer to the port, so where you stay depends on timing and what you want to do.

Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral

Best for: being close to the port, with a beach vibe.

Cocoa Beach and the town of Cape Canaveral are near the port and offer beachfront and beach-adjacent hotels. It's a relaxed, classic Florida beach-town stay and a short ride to the terminal on embarkation morning.

Near Orlando International Airport (MCO)

Best for: late arrivals.

If you land late, an airport hotel can be the easiest choice. The next morning you'll need a transfer to the port, which I'll help you plan with traffic in mind.

Orlando theme park areas

Best for: families who want to add a park day.

Some families combine a cruise with a theme park stay before or after sailing. It's a fun option, but it means a longer drive to the port, so I plan an extra buffer.

Transfers: how you'll get to the ship

Your hotel choice and your transfer go together. Common options include:

I plan transfers as part of the whole trip so you don't have to sort it out on embarkation morning.

Questions to ask before booking a pre-cruise hotel

Hotel policies vary and change, so I confirm details for your specific stay.

A note on hotel perks

When you book certain hotels through an advisor, you may sometimes receive extras such as breakfast or a property credit. Perks vary and aren't guaranteed, and they depend on the hotel, the program and your dates. I'll tell you what's available when I send your options.

Pre-cruise hotels for families and groups

Families

Look for a pool, a quick breakfast option and room layouts that let everyone sleep. A good night before the cruise sets the tone for the whole trip.

Travelers with mobility needs

Ask about accessible rooms, elevator access and transfers with accessible vehicles. I'll help coordinate.

Groups

If your group is arriving from different cities, staying at one hotel near the port makes embarkation day much easier. I can help coordinate rooms and transfers.

After the cruise: consider a post-cruise night

Disembarkation day can be early and busy. If you have a long flight home, a post-cruise hotel night can make the end of the trip calmer. It's also a chance to enjoy Miami or the Space Coast a little longer.

Choosing your ship and cabin

Once your hotel is sorted, the ship and cabin matter most. If you're deciding between big Royal Caribbean ships, see my Wonder of the Seas vs Oasis of the Seas comparison. For cabin location tips, read how to pick a cruise cabin.

FAQ

Where should I stay before a PortMiami cruise?

Downtown Miami and Brickell are close to PortMiami, which makes for an easy morning transfer. Miami Beach gives you a beach day before you sail, and airport hotels work well for late arrivals. The right choice depends on when you land and how you'd like to spend your extra time.

Where should I stay before a Port Canaveral cruise?

Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral are close to Port Canaveral. Orlando airport hotels work well for late arrivals, and theme park areas suit families who want to add a park day before the cruise. I'll help you weigh the drive to the port against how you want to spend your evening.

Do pre-cruise hotels offer shuttles to the port?

Some do. Shuttle policies vary from hotel to hotel, so I confirm the details for your specific hotel before you book. If your hotel doesn't offer one, I'll help you plan another transfer option so getting to the port on embarkation day stays simple and stress-free.

Should I stay near the airport or near the port?

If you land late, stay near the airport so you can get to bed quickly. If you land earlier and want a relaxing evening, stay near the port or the beach. Either way, you'll have a short trip on embarkation morning and a buffer against travel delays.

Can a travel advisor book my hotel and transfers?

Yes. I plan the whole trip, including your pre-cruise hotel, transfers to the port and excursions. That way your arrival, hotel night and embarkation all fit together, and you have one person coordinating the details instead of juggling separate bookings on your own.

Does it cost more to book through a travel advisor?

No. There are no Book with the Captain fees and no markup on cruise and hotel bookings. When you book with me, I compare your options, recommend specific cabins or rooms, handle the booking, and stay with you before, during and after the trip, so you have one person to help.
