Ahoy, Texas! If your first cruise leaves from Galveston, you can probably drive to the ship. I'm Captain Sail, the guide for Book with the Captain, an independent travel advisor with Fora Travel. Here's Galveston for first-timers: terminals, getting there, parking and check-in.
Already set on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas? My Icon of the Seas from Galveston 2027 guide has the itineraries and the full Terminal 10 parking breakdown.
Step 1: Find your terminal first
The Port of Galveston's arrival guide lists four cruise terminals: Terminals 10, 16, 25 and 28. It tells you to confirm your terminal before you work out your route, because signs at the port send you to the right entrance (Port of Galveston arrival guide).
Here's how the port's parking map matches terminals to cruise lines (Port of Galveston parking map):
| Terminal | Cruise lines the port lists |
|---|---|
| Terminal 10 | Royal Caribbean |
| Terminals 25 and 28 | Several lines, including Carnival, Disney and Princess |
For Terminal 16 or any line not shown, and because assignments can change, confirm your terminal with the Port of Galveston or your cruise line.
Step 2: Getting to Galveston
Driving in
The Port of Galveston gives two basic driving approaches (arrival guide):
- From the north and west: take Interstate 45 South to Galveston Island, then follow Harborside Drive to the port.
- From the east: take Interstate 10 West, then Highway 87 South, and use the Bolivar Ferry to cross to the island.
The port's own embarkation-timing article says the Galveston Causeway can back up on sailing mornings, especially on busy Saturdays, and suggests adding at least 30 minutes of buffer to your drive (Port of Galveston, when to arrive). If you're coming from North or West Texas, I usually suggest a night on the island instead. See my Galveston hotel picks.
Flying in
The port names two Houston airports for cruise passengers (arrival guide):
- Houston Hobby (HOU): the closest, which the port puts at about a 45-minute drive.
- George Bush Intercontinental (IAH): about 1.5 hours away, per the port.
The port also notes that many cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, offer transfers from the Houston airports that you can book ahead.
Rideshare, taxis and the trolley
The port says Uber and Lyft are its rideshare providers, and taxis are available at both Houston airports and on the island. The Galveston Island Trolley helps you get around the island, but the port says it doesn't stop at the port (arrival guide).

Step 3: Parking at the port
Port of Galveston Cruise Parking runs the lots on port property. It describes two basic types (arrival guide):
- Economy lots: farther from the terminals, with a free shuttle to and from the terminal.
- Park-and-walk lots: close to the terminals, so you walk in.
The details first-timers ask me about, from the port's parking FAQ:
- When lots open: at 9 a.m. on most sailing days. If disembarkation runs late, the cruise line notifies you and parking opens later.
- Shuttles: free at lots that offer them, running "about every 5–7 minutes." Many shuttles are ADA-equipped for wheelchair and scooter users. Which lots have a shuttle can differ by terminal, so confirm shuttle details for your lot with the Port of Galveston when you reserve.
- Luggage first: you can drop your bags at the terminal before you park.
- Reserving: reservations usually open within 18 months of sailing. The port strongly suggests reserving. Drive-up parking depends on space, and only credit cards are accepted.
- Canceling: cancel online at least 24 hours before your sail date. The port doesn't refund parking for denied boarding.
- Accessible parking: each facility has ADA spaces, including van-accessible ones, on a first-come, first-served basis. They can't be reserved ahead.
- RVs: accepted in the economy lots, and long vehicles may need two spaces.
- Garage height: the port lists a 6-foot-8-inch clearance for its SMP garage, so check before you drive a tall van or roof box into any garage.
Rates differ by lot and change, so I don't quote them. Check the port's reservation site when you book. The port also says it isn't affiliated with private off-port lots and isn't responsible for vehicles parked there or rides from them (Port of Galveston parking reservations).

Step 4: Check-in and boarding
Before you leave home
Every cruise line has its own online check-in. Royal Caribbean, for example, asks guests to finish check-in in its app at least 3 days before the cruise and to arrive within the time slot picked during check-in. It says early arrivals can't board early, and that all guests must be checked in and on board at least 90 minutes before port operations close (Royal Caribbean).
What to bring to the terminal
The port's list is short: your cruise tickets, a photo ID or passport, and any travel documents your line requires (arrival guide). Read the passport section of my first Caribbean cruise tips well before sailing day.
At the terminal
Expect security screening, then check-in with your cruise line. Porters take your checked luggage at the terminal, so you carry only personal items (arrival guide).
Timing
The port's timing article says most Galveston terminals open check-in around 10:30 to 11 a.m., with boarding usually starting between 11 and 11:30 a.m. It also says arriving before 10 a.m. typically just means waiting outside (Port of Galveston, when to arrive). Your line's assigned window always comes first.
My quick Galveston checklist
Confirm your terminal, reserve the lot that serves it, finish online check-in and keep documents and medications in your carry-on. On sailing day, drop your bags at the terminal first, then park.
Travel insurance is optional. If you're considering it, read what a policy covers before you decide.
FAQ
Which terminal does my Galveston cruise leave from?
The Port of Galveston lists four cruise terminals: 10, 16, 25 and 28. Its parking map shows Royal Caribbean at Terminal 10 and Carnival, Disney and Princess at Terminals 25 and 28. Assignments can change, so confirm your terminal with the port or your cruise line before you book parking.
What time should I arrive at the Port of Galveston?
Arrive within the check-in window your cruise line gives you. The port's timing article says most terminals open check-in around 10:30 to 11 a.m., and arriving before 10 a.m. usually means waiting outside. Add buffer time for causeway traffic, parking and the shuttle, especially on a busy Saturday sailing.
Do I need to reserve parking at the Port of Galveston?
The port strongly suggests reserving, and reservations usually open within 18 months of sailing. You can sometimes pay at the gate if space is left, but only credit cards are accepted. Pick a lot that serves your terminal, and cancel online at least 24 hours before sailing if your plans change.
Is there a shuttle from the parking lots to the terminal?
Yes, from the economy lots. The port says shuttles are free where offered and run about every five to seven minutes, and many are ADA-equipped for wheelchair and scooter users. Shuttle service varies by lot, so confirm it for your lot with the Port of Galveston. You can drop your luggage at the terminal before parking.
Should I fly into Hobby or Bush Intercontinental for a Galveston cruise?
The Port of Galveston calls Hobby the closest airport, at about a 45-minute drive, and puts Bush Intercontinental about 1.5 hours away. Traffic changes both. Many cruise lines sell airport transfers, and rideshare is available. Whichever airport you choose, I recommend landing the day before you sail.
Does it cost more to book with Book with the Captain?
No Book with the Captain fees and no markup on cruise and hotel bookings: you pay the cruise line's or hotel's rate. I may earn a commission from the supplier at no extra cost to you.
