Book with the Captain is an independent travel advisor with Fora Travel. For years, Texans who wanted to try Royal Caribbean's newest class of ship had to fly to Florida first. That changes in 2027. Royal Caribbean says that "starting August 2027, Icon of the Seas® calls Galveston home" (Royal Caribbean, Texas cruises). Below I cover what's confirmed so far: who this suits, the itinerary types, the family angle, the terminal and parking, and how to plan the night before. Anything I couldn't confirm from an official source, I've left out.

What's confirmed about Icon in Galveston

Here's what Royal Caribbean has published so far:

Sailing dates and itineraries can change. I re-check the current schedule before quoting any sailing.

Who Icon from Galveston suits

Royal Caribbean itself pitches the Icon sailings as "Best for families wanting the boldest adventures at sea" (Royal Caribbean). In practice, I think it fits:

If you only have four or five nights, Royal Caribbean lists separate "Short Getaways" of "4-5 night cruises" roundtrip from Galveston, and its page shows Liberty of the Seas in that 4–5 night range (Royal Caribbean). That's a different ship and a different trip, so I treat it as its own option.

The itinerary types

Based on the deployment schedule, Icon's Galveston sailings come in three lengths:

Length Type (per Royal Caribbean) Ports named in the schedule
6 nights Western Caribbean Drawn from Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatan
7 nights Western Caribbean Drawn from Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatan
8 nights Perfect Day CocoCay & Western Caribbean Perfect Day CocoCay plus Western Caribbean ports

Exact port combinations vary by sailing, so I confirm the ports for your specific date. Here's how Royal Caribbean describes each port on its Texas cruises page:

Family features on Icon

Icon is the first ship in Royal Caribbean's Icon Class. I've covered the ship's family areas, how Icon compares with the Oasis Class ships, and how to choose between them in my Royal Caribbean Icon Class family guide. For Texas sailings, Royal Caribbean's own page says only that the Icon cruises offer "More thrills, more dining, more entertainment than any ship Texas has ever seen." That's the cruise line's marketing claim, not my measurement.

Royal Caribbean also lists what's included in the cruise fare on its Texas sailings: dining options for every meal, live shows and comedy, onboard activities like rock climbing, and youth programs (Royal Caribbean). Specialty restaurants, some activities and gratuities can cost extra. I'll spell out what's included on your sailing when I send options.

The terminal: Cruise Terminal 10

According to Royal Caribbean, its Galveston sailings leave from "Cruise Terminal 10 at Pier 10, located at 1402 Harborside Drive (also listed as 1152 Royal Caribbean Way), Galveston, TX 77550." It describes the building as "the world's first Net-Zero Energy cruise terminal" (Royal Caribbean). The Port of Galveston also says that "Galveston Cruise Terminal 10 serves Royal Caribbean cruise ships" (Port of Galveston parking map).

Royal Caribbean asks guests to "expect delays related to security procedures" and to "not arrive before your selected arrival time as space is limited in the terminal." It lists its local representative, Intercruises, at 1-409-682-3157 for day-of-travel questions (Royal Caribbean FAQ).

Driving in and parking

Directions. Royal Caribbean publishes turn-by-turn directions from both Houston airports. Both routes end the same way: "Take exit 1C towards Harborside Drive/Hwy 275," then "Turn left onto Harborside Drive," and turn into Royal Caribbean Way to Pier 10 (Royal Caribbean FAQ). Drive times depend on where you start and on traffic, so I haven't listed any.

Parking. The Port of Galveston lists these lots for Terminal 10 (parking map):

Royal Caribbean says parking "can either be paid at the port or pre-paid on the Port of Galveston website," and that "Guests who park outside of the Port of Galveston will need to arrange transport to the cruise terminal." It also notes it "is not responsible for theft or damage to vehicles" (Royal Caribbean FAQ). The port doesn't post one daily rate on its parking map page, so I don't quote parking prices. Check the port's reservation site when you book.

Tip: If you're driving a tall van or have a roof box, look up the garage's clearance before you choose it.

Arriving a day early

Even when you're driving, I suggest building in a buffer night, especially if you're coming from North or West Texas or flying in from out of state. Traffic, weather or a late flight into Houston shouldn't decide whether you make the ship. I explain how to plan that night in Why Arrive a Day Early for Your Cruise, and I cover cabin choice in How to Pick a Cruise Cabin.

Where to stay the night before (in general terms)

I'm not naming specific hotels or rates here because those change. In broad strokes, families usually consider:

Tell me your dates and I'll check the hotel options and any perks for your stay. Perks vary and aren't guaranteed. Travel insurance is optional, and I'm happy to explain how it works.

FAQ

When does Icon of the Seas start sailing from Galveston?

Royal Caribbean's Galveston 2027 deployment schedule lists Icon's first Galveston sailing on August 16, 2027, and the cruise line's Texas page says Icon "calls Galveston home" starting August 2027. Schedules can change, so I confirm the current dates with Royal Caribbean before quoting any specific sailing for your family.

How long are Icon's cruises from Galveston?

According to Royal Caribbean's deployment schedule, Icon offers 6- and 7-night Western Caribbean sailings and 8-night Perfect Day CocoCay & Western Caribbean sailings from Galveston. Every one is roundtrip, so you start and finish at the same terminal. That makes driving in and parking straightforward for Texas families planning a full week away.

Which ports does Icon visit from Galveston?

The schedule names Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico and Roatan in Honduras, and the 8-night sailings also stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas. The exact ports differ by sailing, so check the specific itinerary for your date before you plan shore days or book excursions.

Which terminal does Royal Caribbean use in Galveston?

Royal Caribbean says its Galveston sailings use Cruise Terminal 10 at Pier 10, 1402 Harborside Drive (also listed as 1152 Royal Caribbean Way), Galveston, TX 77550. The Port of Galveston confirms that Terminal 10 serves Royal Caribbean ships. Arrive at your selected time, because Royal Caribbean says space in the terminal is limited.

Where do I park for Icon in Galveston?

The Port of Galveston lists several lots for Terminal 10: North, North Premium, South (with a free shuttle), Pier 10, Pier 12 and the Terminal 16 garage. Royal Caribbean says you can pay at the port or prepay on the Port of Galveston website. Rates vary by lot, so check them when you reserve.

Should Texans still arrive a day early?

I recommend it for anyone flying in or driving a long distance. Ships leave on schedule, and a buffer night protects you from traffic, weather and flight delays. Staying on Galveston Island keeps your embarkation morning short, while a hotel near the Houston airports suits families who land late the night before.
