Royal Caribbean built its Icon Class ships around one idea: a family vacation with something for every age. In 2027, four Icon Class ships will sail from four different homeports, so it's a great year to plan ahead. In this guide, I compare the ships, their debut dates, their 2027 homeports and the family features that matter most, plus when to book for school breaks.
I'm Captain Sail, the guide for Book with the Captain, an independent travel advisor affiliated with Fora Travel. If you're deciding between Icon Class and the Oasis Class ships, read my Wonder of the Seas vs Oasis of the Seas comparison too.

Icon of the Seas
Debut: Royal Caribbean says Icon of the Seas welcomed its first vacationers on Saturday, January 27, 2024, from Miami, after a naming celebration with Lionel Messi (press release).
2027 homeport and itineraries: According to Royal Caribbean's 2027–2028 deployment summary, Icon sails 7-night Perfect Day at CocoCay and Eastern or Western Caribbean voyages from Miami early in 2027. It then moves to Galveston, Texas. Royal Caribbean's Galveston 2027 schedule lists 6- and 7-night Western Caribbean and 8-night Perfect Day CocoCay & Western Caribbean sailings starting August 16, 2027, visiting Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatan.
Good for: Gulf Coast families who would rather drive to the port than fly, and Miami families sailing early in the year.
Star of the Seas
Debut: Star of the Seas was named in Port Canaveral (Orlando) in August 2025 (press release). Royal Caribbean also described it as "debuting in Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida, in August 2025" (press release).
2027 homeport and itineraries: The deployment summary shows Star sailing from Port Canaveral throughout 2027, on 7-night Perfect Day at CocoCay & Caribbean and 7-night Western Caribbean voyages.
Good for: families pairing a cruise with Orlando theme parks.
Legend of the Seas
Debut: Royal Caribbean took delivery of Legend of the Seas in Turku, Finland, ahead of a July 2026 European debut (press release, June 10, 2026). Royal Caribbean's earlier announcement listed an August 2026 first sailing, so July 2026 is the most recent official date.
2027 homeport and itineraries: Legend sails year-round from Fort Lauderdale on 6-night Western Caribbean and 8-night Southern Caribbean vacations, all visiting Perfect Day at CocoCay. The deployment summary also shows a 2027 summer season of 7-night Western Mediterranean voyages from Barcelona and Rome (Civitavecchia), before Legend returns to Fort Lauderdale.
Good for: families who want a Mediterranean summer, or a Fort Lauderdale departure.
Hero of the Seas (new for 2027)
Debut: Hero of the Seas is the fourth Icon Class ship and arrives in Miami in August 2027 (royalcaribbean.com; press center). It floated out at the Meyer Turku shipyard in September 2026.
2027 itineraries: Royal Caribbean's Hero 2027 schedule starts with an August 1, 2027 sailing. Most voyages are 7-night Perfect Day CocoCay & Eastern or Western Caribbean trips, visiting ports such as St. Maarten, St. Thomas, Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatan. The schedule also includes 3-night CocoCay getaways and holiday sailings in late December. Royal Caribbean says every Hero sailing includes Perfect Day at CocoCay.
Family features Royal Caribbean highlights: nine pools, new waterslides including what it calls the first funnel raft slide at sea, Category 6 waterpark, youth programs and 28 dining venues.
Good for: families who want the newest ship and can plan around a first-season schedule.
Later Icon Class ships: Royal Caribbean has also ordered a fifth Icon Class ship for delivery in 2028, and a sixth and seventh for 2029 and 2030 (June 2026 press release). Their names, homeports and itineraries haven't been announced.
Family features across Icon Class
Surfside: the neighborhood for young families
Royal Caribbean describes Surfside as "a neighborhood made for young families from end to end," aimed at kids ages six and under (Icon reveal press release). It includes:
- Splashaway Bay, an aquapark with mini slides, splash zones and water cannons
- Baby Bay, a splash zone for the littlest cruisers
- Water's Edge pool, so parents can relax nearby
- A carousel, an arcade, places to eat, and easy access to Adventure Ocean
Thrill Island and Category 6
Category 6 is Royal Caribbean's largest waterpark at sea. On Icon it has six record-breaking slides, including family raft slides for four riders per raft. Older kids and teens can also try Crown's Edge, the FlowRider surf simulator, the Adrenaline Peak rock wall and mini golf. Height and age rules apply to some attractions, so check them for your kids.
Kids clubs and teen spaces
According to royalcaribbean.com, the complimentary Adventure Ocean youth program is grouped by age:
- Aquanauts: 3–5 years
- Explorers: 6–8 years
- Voyagers: 9–12 years
Teens have their own hangout, Social020. For babies, Royal Babies & Tots nursery sessions (6–36 months) are offered on select ships and carry an extra fee. I'll confirm which programs your ship and sailing include.
Family cabins
Icon Class ships offer room types designed for families. On Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean highlights (reservations press release):
- Family Infinite Balconies, for up to six guests, with a kids' bunk alcove and a split bathroom
- Surfside Family View rooms and Surfside Family Suites, with views of the family neighborhood and, in the suites, a kids' room
- The Ultimate Family Townhouse, a three-story suite with an in-suite slide, spaces for karaoke and movies, two private balconies and a private entrance to Surfside
Family cabins are limited on every ship, and the Ultimate Family Townhouse is a single, highly sought-after suite type. Ask me to confirm which family cabins your ship offers. My guide on how to pick a cruise cabin covers the basics.
When to book for school breaks
- Spring break and summer 2027: school break dates are fixed, and family cabins sell first, so start planning as early as you can. See my spring break 2027 family cruises from Florida guide.
- Hero of the Seas' first season (August 2027 onward): new ships draw a lot of interest, so book early if you want a specific cabin.
- Thanksgiving and the holidays: Hero's late-December holiday sailings and other Icon Class holiday dates are worth watching.
- Flexibility helps: if you can travel outside peak weeks, you'll often have more cabin choice.
Perks vary and aren't guaranteed. Any onboard offers apply to select sailings only.
How to choose your Icon Class ship
- Start with your homeport. Miami (Icon early 2027, Hero from August 2027), Port Canaveral (Star), Fort Lauderdale (Legend) or Galveston (Icon from August 2027).
- Pick your dates. School breaks often decide the ship for you.
- Match the itinerary. Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, Southern Caribbean or, on Legend, a summer in the Mediterranean.
- Choose a family cabin. Lock in the layout before you lock in extras.

What ages is Adventure Ocean for?
Adventure Ocean is Royal Caribbean's complimentary youth program for kids ages 3 to 12, split into Aquanauts (3–5), Explorers (6–8) and Voyagers (9–12). Teens have their own space, Social020. Royal Babies & Tots nursery sessions for ages 6–36 months are offered on select ships for an extra fee.

Surfside is Royal Caribbean's neighborhood made for young families, aimed at kids ages six and under. It includes the Splashaway Bay aquapark, Baby Bay, the Water's Edge pool, a carousel, an arcade and places to eat, all close to Adventure Ocean, so parents can stay nearby all day.

The Ultimate Family Townhouse debuted on Icon of the Seas. Royal Caribbean describes it as a three-story suite with an in-suite slide, spaces for karaoke and movies, two private balconies and a private entrance to Surfside.
