Ahoy! I'm Captain Sail, the guide for Book with the Captain, an independent travel advisor of Fora Travel. If you live in Austin, San Antonio or elsewhere in Central Texas, Galveston is the cruise port you can drive to. There's no flight to book, and you can pack the car the way you like. What takes planning is sailing day: getting to the island, parking and making your check-in window. This guide covers those steps and the 2027 trip lengths that sail from Galveston.

New to this port? My first cruise from Galveston guide covers terminal and check-in basics, so I'll focus on the Central Texas side here.

Quick facts: Central Texas to a Galveston cruise

  • Route onto the island: The Port of Galveston says drivers from the north and west take Interstate 45 South directly to Galveston Island, then follow Harborside Drive to the port.
  • Terminals: The port lists Terminals 25, 28, 16 and 10. Confirm yours before you leave.
  • Traffic buffer: The port's blog says to build in at least 30 extra minutes, because the Galveston Causeway can back up on embarkation mornings.
  • Parking: The port offers economy lots with shuttle service and park-and-walk lots near each terminal.
  • 2027 trip lengths: Royal Caribbean lists 4- to 5-night and 6- to 8-night Western Caribbean sailings from Galveston.

Plan the drive backward from your check-in window

Your fixed point on sailing day is your check-in window, not the time you leave home. Royal Caribbean asks guests to arrive within the time slot chosen during check-in in its app. It encourages finishing check-in at least 3 days before the cruise, and says every guest must be checked in and on board at least 90 minutes before port operations close, or they won't be allowed to sail.

The Port of Galveston's blog adds that most terminals open check-in around 10:30 to 11:00 a.m., and that arriving before 10:00 a.m. usually means waiting outside.

Build your plan in reverse:

  1. Your check-in window. Pick it in your cruise line's app.
  2. Terminal time. Allow for parking, a shuttle if your lot uses one, luggage drop and security.
  3. The causeway buffer. Add the 30 minutes or more the port suggests.
  4. Your drive. Check your map app the night before and again in the morning. Plan your route to I-45 South, then add fuel and food stops.

Captain's tip: If the math puts your departure from Austin or San Antonio before dawn, drive down the day before. My Galveston hotel night-before guide covers where to stay.

Choose your parking before you leave

The Port of Galveston runs cruise parking with two main types:

Option What the port says Good fit if
Economy lots Farther from the terminals, with free shuttle service You don't mind a short shuttle ride
Park-and-walk lots Within walking distance of each terminal You want quick access to the ship

The port's arrival guide recommends reserving cruise parking ahead of time. It also says porters are available at the terminal to help unload luggage.

Good to know: The port says ADA-accessible parking is available in all lots on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pick a 2027 trip length that fits your time off

Royal Caribbean lists these roundtrip options from Galveston:

Trip length Ship (per Royal Caribbean) Where it goes
4–5 nights Liberty of the Seas Short getaways to Mexico
6–8 nights Symphony of the Seas Up to 3 Caribbean ports, like Cozumel, Roatán and Costa Maya
6–8 nights Icon of the Seas, starting August 2027 Western Caribbean

Royal Caribbean also lists Perfect Day CocoCay, its private destination in The Bahamas, on 8-night Caribbean itineraries from Galveston. A long weekend usually points to the shorter trips, and a full week off opens up the longer ones. For more on the newest ship, see my Icon of the Seas in Galveston 2027 guide.

FAQ

How do I get from Austin or San Antonio to the Port of Galveston?

The Port of Galveston says drivers from the north and west take Interstate 45 South directly to Galveston Island, then follow Harborside Drive to the port. Use your map app to plan the route from home to I-45, and confirm your terminal first, because signs at the port direct you to the correct entrance.

What time should we leave Central Texas on sailing day?

Work backward from your check-in window. Allow time for parking, shuttles and security, plus the 30 extra minutes the port's blog suggests for causeway traffic. Then add your drive time from your map app and any stops. If that means leaving before dawn, consider driving down the day before.

Where should we park for a Galveston cruise?

The Port of Galveston offers economy lots with free shuttle service to the terminals, and park-and-walk lots within walking distance of each terminal. The port recommends reserving ahead. ADA-accessible parking is available in all lots on a first-come, first-served basis. Check the port's parking map for lot locations and shuttle routes.

Which 2027 Galveston cruises fit a long weekend?

Royal Caribbean lists 4- to 5-night trips on Liberty of the Seas from Galveston, which can fit a long weekend. For a full week, it lists 6- to 8-night trips on Symphony of the Seas, and Icon of the Seas from August 2027. Check exact dates against your time off.
