Ahoy! I'm Captain Sail, the guide for Book with the Captain, an independent travel advisor of Fora Travel. If you're flying in from out of state to start a Caribbean cruise, Fort Lauderdale is worth a close look. Port Everglades sits next to the city's main airport, so the trip from your gate to your ship can be short. This guide covers getting from the airport to the port, what you need at the security gate, parking if you drive in and the Caribbean routes that sail from here.
Quick facts: flying in to sail from Fort Lauderdale
- Airport: Port Everglades says Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is located next to the port.
- Transfer buffer: The port suggests allowing at least 45 minutes between your flight's arrival and your cruise check-in time.
- Security gate: The port asks cruise guests 18 and older to show government-issued photo ID and cruise documents at the entrance checkpoint.
- Parking: The port says it doesn't accept reservations or pre-payment for parking.
- Routes: Royal Caribbean lists Fort Lauderdale among its Florida ports for the Bahamas and the Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean.
From the airport to the port
Port Everglades says Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is just minutes away on U.S. 1. Even so, it suggests allowing at least 45 minutes between your flight's arrival and your cruise check-in time, to claim luggage and fill out forms at the terminal.
The port lists several ways to make the transfer:
| Option | What the port says |
|---|---|
| Taxi or rideshare | Available for the trip from the airport to the port |
| Cruise or package transfer | Often included in many cruise packages; check with your cruise line or travel advisor |
| Hotel transfer | Many area hotels provide transportation to the port; ask your hotel |
| Rental car | The airport's Rental Car Center houses many rental companies in one place |
Captain's tip: A short transfer doesn't make a same-day flight risk-free. Flights can be delayed, so many travelers fly in the day before. See my guide to arriving a day early for your cruise.
At the port entrance
Port Everglades has three entrances: SE 17th Street at Eisenhower Boulevard, State Road 84 just east of U.S. 1 at Spangler Boulevard, and I-595 East at Eller Drive. Each entrance has a security checkpoint where cruise guests and visitors 18 and older must show:
- Government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport
- Cruise documents
The port also notes that no weapons are allowed on port property, under Florida law, and that vehicles are subject to search. Traveling with kids? My kids' cruise documents guide covers what families need for the ship itself.
Good to know: The port says colorful wayfinding signs featuring Florida native plants and animals direct cruise guests to the parking garages and terminals.

If you drive in instead
Port Everglades says drivers on I-95, I-75 or Florida's Turnpike can take the exit to I-595 East, then the exit to Port Everglades. If you're already in the Fort Lauderdale area, the SE 17th Street or State Road 84 entrances may be more convenient.
On parking, the port runs on-site garages and lots for cruise guests and doesn't take reservations or pre-payment. It matches garages to terminals:
- Heron Garage: serves Cruise Terminals 2 and 4. Follow the orange signs with a flying heron.
- Palm Garage: serves Cruise Terminals 19, 21, 25, 26 and 29, with a shuttle to Terminal 29. Follow the green signs with a palm frond.
- Oversized vehicles: limited parking is available. The port asks you to call its parking team.
Check your cruise documents for your terminal before you choose where to park.
Where you can sail from Fort Lauderdale
On its Florida cruises page, Royal Caribbean lists Fort Lauderdale as a roundtrip port for these routes:
| Route | Trip length (from Florida) |
|---|---|
| The Bahamas | 3–4 nights |
| Western Caribbean | 4–8 nights |
| Eastern Caribbean | 7–8 nights |
| Southern Caribbean | 8–9 nights |
Those ranges cover several Florida ports, so exact lengths from Fort Lauderdale depend on the ship and date. Port Everglades says it also has multiday cruise lines and daily ferry service to the Bahamas. Weighing Florida's west coast instead? See my Tampa cruise planning guide.

- Keep photo ID and cruise documents handy for the port checkpoint
- Complete your cruise line's online check-in before you fly
FAQ
How far is the Fort Lauderdale airport from the cruise port?
Port Everglades says Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is just minutes away on U.S. 1, and describes it as located next to the port. The port still suggests allowing at least 45 minutes between your flight's arrival and your cruise check-in time, to claim luggage and fill out forms at the terminal.
Can I fly in on the same day as my cruise from Fort Lauderdale?
The port says the airport's location makes it easy to fly and cruise the same day, and suggests at least 45 minutes between landing and check-in. Flights can be delayed, though, so weigh the risk. Many travelers fly in the day before to give themselves a cushion before sailing.
What do I need to show at the Port Everglades entrance?
Each port entrance has a security checkpoint. Port Everglades says cruise guests and visitors 18 and older must show government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport, along with their cruise documents. No weapons are allowed on port property under Florida law, and vehicles are subject to search.
Can I reserve parking at Port Everglades?
No. Port Everglades says it doesn't accept reservations or pre-payment for parking. It runs on-site garages and lots for cruise guests, matched to terminals: the Heron Garage serves Terminals 2 and 4, and the Palm Garage serves Terminals 19, 21, 25, 26 and 29. Check your terminal before you arrive.
