Ahoy! I'm Captain Sail, the guide for Book with the Captain, an independent travel advisor of Fora Travel. If you live in Houston and you've never cruised, you're in a good spot: the Port of Galveston is close enough to reach by car. This guide is for first-timers. It covers what to expect, which documents to bring, how embarkation day works, what to pack and how to pick a trip length that suits you.
Quick facts: a first cruise from Houston
- The port: Most Houston-area cruisers sail from the Port of Galveston, which lists Terminals 25, 28, 16 and 10.
- Getting there: The Port of Galveston says drivers from the north take Interstate 45 South directly to Galveston Island, then follow Harborside Drive to the port.
- Documents: Royal Caribbean calls a passport the best ID for travel, valid at least 6 months after your cruise ends.
- First trip length: Royal Caribbean says most first-time cruisers choose a 3- to 7-night cruise.
What to expect on your first cruise
A cruise is a trip where you unpack once and wake up somewhere new. Royal Caribbean says its fare includes:
| Included in the fare | Not included |
|---|---|
| Your stateroom, with daily housekeeping | Specialty dining |
| Meals at complimentary restaurants, like the Main Dining Room and Windjammer | Most drinks |
| Broadway-style shows and live music | Wi-Fi |
| Pools, waterslides, rock climbing and the kids and teens program | Spa services and shore excursions |
| The Royal Caribbean app | Gratuities |
Royal Caribbean also says its cruises are designed to be cashless. Your SeaPass card, linked to your preferred payment method, is your room key and ID, and it's used for purchases on board. It suggests bringing a small amount of cash for local shopping, transportation and tips in port.
Captain's tip: Inclusions vary by cruise line, so read what's included for the line and ship you're considering. I'm glad to walk you through it.
Documents: sort them out first
Royal Caribbean strongly recommends that all guests travel with a valid passport, valid at least 6 months after the cruise ends. It says U.S. citizens can cruise with a U.S. birth certificate on most sailings from the U.S., but the certificate has to meet its requirements. It also says guests 15 and under don't need a photo ID, just the birth certificate.
Royal Caribbean warns that guests who arrive without the right travel documents may be denied boarding. Requirements vary by departure port and itinerary, so check them for your sailing. Cruising with kids? My kids' cruise documents guide goes deeper.
Getting from Houston to the port
The Port of Galveston says drivers from the north and west take Interstate 45 South directly to Galveston Island, then follow Harborside Drive to the port. Confirm your terminal before you leave, because signs at the port direct you to the right entrance.
Not driving? The port names Uber and Lyft as its rideshare providers. If you drive, it offers economy lots with a free shuttle and park-and-walk lots near the terminals, and it recommends reserving ahead.
Good to know: The port's blog says the Galveston Causeway can back up on embarkation mornings, so build in at least 30 extra minutes. Check your map app for the drive itself.

How embarkation day works
Royal Caribbean describes the day like this:
- Weeks before: check in on the Royal Caribbean app and choose an arrival time.
- At the terminal: arrive during the time you picked and hand your bags to the porters. They deliver them to your stateroom later that day.
- In line: keep your travel documents on you at all times in the terminal.
- On board: pick up your SeaPass card, finish the safety briefing and head to the sail-away party.
Royal Caribbean's arrival FAQ adds that every guest must be checked in and on board at least 90 minutes before port operations close, or they won't be allowed to sail.
What to pack in your day bag
Your checked bags may not reach your room until later that day, so carry what you need for the first afternoon. Royal Caribbean suggests a day bag with your swimsuit and sunscreen. I'd add:
- Your travel documents and photo ID
- Any medications you take
- A phone charger
- A change of clothes for dinner
Choosing your first cruise length
Royal Caribbean says a 3- to 4-night sailing to The Bahamas or Mexico is an easy way to try cruising, while a 7-night cruise gives you time for sea days, several ports and more of the ship. From Galveston, it lists:
| Trip length | Ship (per Royal Caribbean) | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|
| 4–5 nights | Liberty of the Seas | Trying cruising on a long weekend |
| 6–8 nights | Symphony of the Seas | A full week with more ports |
| 6–8 nights | Icon of the Seas, starting August 2027 | A full week, from August 2027 |
Royal Caribbean says its 6- to 8-night Galveston trips visit up to 3 Caribbean ports, like Cozumel, Roatán and Costa Maya.
Your first-cruise checklist
- Check that everyone's passport or birth certificate meets the line's rules
- Download your cruise line's app and complete check-in
- Choose your arrival time
- Confirm your terminal and reserve parking or plan a rideshare
- Pack a day bag with documents, medications, swimsuit and sunscreen
- Add the port's 30-minute causeway buffer
FAQ
Do cruises leave from Houston?
Most Houston-area cruisers sail from the Port of Galveston on Galveston Island, which lists Terminals 25, 28, 16 and 10 in its arrival and departure guide. For current sailings, check the port's cruise schedule or ask me, and I'll match ships and dates to your plans.
Do I need a passport for my first cruise?
Royal Caribbean calls a passport the best ID for a cruise, valid at least 6 months after your cruise ends. On most sailings from the U.S., U.S. citizens can also board with an original birth certificate and government-issued photo ID, but requirements vary by port and itinerary, so check your sailing.
How long should my first cruise be?
Royal Caribbean says most first-timers choose 3 to 7 nights. A short trip to The Bahamas or Mexico is an easy way to try cruising, and a week gives you sea days, several ports and more of the ship. From Galveston, it lists 4- to 5-night and 6- to 8-night trips.
What should I bring on embarkation day?
Keep your travel documents on you at all times in the terminal, Royal Caribbean says, and carry a day bag with your swimsuit and sunscreen. Porters take your other bags and deliver them to your stateroom later that day. I also suggest packing medications, a phone charger and a change of clothes.
