Ahoy! I'm Captain Sail, the guide for Book with the Captain, an independent travel advisor of Fora Travel. If you live in Minneapolis or Denver, a winter cruise starts with a flight. That makes your first decision less about the ship and more about the home port you fly into. This guide walks through the home ports, what each offers and how to plan for winter weather on your end of the trip.

Quick facts: winter cruises for travelers who fly in - Florida: Royal Caribbean sails from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando (Port Canaveral) and Tampa on 2- to 9-night Caribbean cruises. - Texas: Royal Caribbean lists 4- to 8-night Western Caribbean trips from Galveston in 2027. - West Coast: Royal Caribbean offers cruises from Los Angeles to Mexico, from three-night trips to week-long escapes. - Hurricane season: NOAA's National Hurricane Center says "The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30." - Boarding cutoff: Royal Caribbean says every guest must be aboard at least 90 minutes before port operations close.

Why plan your winter 2027 cruise ahead

If you're planning around school breaks or holidays, settle your sailing, flights and a pre-cruise night together so the whole plan fits your dates. Start with the home port, because it shapes your flight.

Which home port to fly to

Here's what Royal Caribbean's own pages say about each port. Other cruise lines sail from these ports too; ask me for the full lineup for your dates.

Home port What Royal Caribbean lists Good fit for
Miami, FL Wonder of the Seas on 3- to 4-night Bahamas getaways; Icon of the Seas on 7-night Caribbean cruises (Icon sails from Galveston starting August 2027) A short getaway or a full week
Orlando (Port Canaveral), FL Star of the Seas on weeklong getaways Families pairing a cruise with Orlando
Galveston, TX Liberty of the Seas (4–5 nights) and Symphony of the Seas (6–8 nights) in 2027, plus Icon of the Seas starting August 2027 Western Caribbean: Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatán
Los Angeles, CA Three-night trips to week-long cruises to Catalina Island and the Mexican Riviera, including Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas A West Coast option for Mexico

Royal Caribbean also lists Fort Lauderdale and Tampa among its Florida departure ports, on 2- to 9-night Caribbean cruises.

Captain's tip: Before you fall for a ship, look up the nonstop flights from your home airport to each port city.

Minneapolis travelers: picking a port

Most sailings from the ports above head for the Caribbean, The Bahamas or Mexico. Look at the Florida ports first if you want the widest choice: Royal Caribbean names four of them, with trips from 2 to 9 nights. Galveston is worth a look if you want the Western Caribbean ports Royal Caribbean lists from Texas: Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatán. Compare your flight options to Florida and to Houston before you choose.

Denver travelers: picking a port

Denver travelers have the same Florida and Texas options, plus the West Coast. Royal Caribbean offers Los Angeles cruises to Mexico, from three-night trips to week-long escapes, with stops such as Catalina Island, Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas. If you want the Caribbean, compare your flight options to Florida and to Houston.

Good to know: NOAA's National Hurricane Center says "The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30." Check your sailing dates against it. Travel insurance is optional.

Build a winter weather buffer

A snowy morning at home can delay a flight, and the ship won't wait. Royal Caribbean says guests should arrive within the check-in time slot chosen in its app, and everyone must be checked in and aboard at least 90 minutes before port operations close, or they will not be allowed to sail. Flying in the day before puts a buffer between your flight and those deadlines. My arrive a day early guide covers how to plan that night.

FAQ

Which cruise ports can I fly to from Minneapolis or Denver in winter?

Royal Caribbean sails from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral and Tampa on 2- to 9-night Caribbean cruises, and lists 4- to 8-night Western Caribbean trips from Galveston in 2027. Denver travelers can also look at Los Angeles, where Royal Caribbean offers Mexico cruises from three nights to a week.

Should I fly in the day before a winter cruise?

It's worth considering, especially in winter. Royal Caribbean says every guest must be checked in and aboard at least 90 minutes before port operations close, or they can't sail. Flying in the day before puts a buffer between a weather delay and that deadline. Line up a hotel near your port for the night.

Is winter a good time for a Caribbean cruise?

It depends on what matters to you. NOAA's National Hurricane Center says "The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30," so check your sailing dates against that window. Weather still varies by region and week, so check the forecast close to your trip and pack layers for travel days.

What changes for Galveston and Miami cruises in 2027?

Royal Caribbean says Icon of the Seas sails 7-night Caribbean cruises from Miami and sails from Galveston starting August 2027. Its Texas page lists Liberty of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas from Galveston in 2027 as well. Confirm your ship and port for your exact sailing date.
