Port Canaveral & Miami Hotels: Cruise Shuttles and Parking

Staying the night before a Florida cruise? Here's how parking and shuttles really work at Port Canaveral and PortMiami, plus hotels whose cruise details I could verify.

Ahoy! The question I get most from first-time cruisers sailing out of Florida is about the hotel the night before: "Does it have a shuttle to the ship, and can I leave my car there?" I'm Captain Sail, the guide for Book with the Captain, an independent travel advisor with Fora Travel. Below is what Port Canaveral, PortMiami and a few hotels actually say about shuttles and parking. Anything I couldn't confirm on an official page is marked unverified.

If you haven't decided whether to arrive early, start with why I plan a day early for every cruise. For neighborhoods and general hotel tips, see hotels near PortMiami and Port Canaveral before a cruise.

Port Canaveral: how parking works

Port Canaveral's own setup takes care of a lot. The port says its garages and surface lots sit next to each cruise terminal, so you park and walk with no lot shuttle needed (Port Canaveral directions & parking). Other details from the port:

Getting from the airport

The port puts Orlando International (MCO) about 45 minutes west via SR 528 East, a toll road. It also lists Melbourne Orlando International (MLB) about 40 minutes south and Orlando Sanford (SFB) about an hour northwest (Port Canaveral directions & parking). For rides, the port says Uber and Lyft operate there, major rental-car companies run port shuttles, and some cruise lines offer airport transfers. Cocoa Beach Express is its official ground transportation concessionaire (Port Canaveral transportation).

Hotel shuttles at Port Canaveral

The port says "many hotels offer complimentary or scheduled shuttle services" and tells you to arrange them with your hotel directly (Port Canaveral transportation). Terms are set hotel by hotel. These are the hotels I could check:

Radisson Resort at the Port (Cape Canaveral). The hotel says it's about 5 minutes from the port. Its transportation page says Park & Cruise packages include parking for one car for the length of your cruise plus a shuttle to the port, with Cocoa Beach Express as its transportation partner. It also says you can add parking and the shuttle at check-in if you've already booked a room. One package notes the airport shuttle isn't included, and the number of shuttle riders included differs between packages (Radisson transportation). The same page says sister hotels Four Points by Sheraton and Cocoa Beach Suites offer cruise parking with a shuttle, even for non-guests.

Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport. It's inside MCO, between Terminals A and B, per the airport (MCO ground transportation FAQ). That makes it handy after a late landing, but you'll still need a transfer or rideshare to the port. Hotel-run port shuttle: unverified.

The Westin Cocoa Beach Resort & Spa. I'd pick it for a beach stay after your cruise. Our hotel guide notes it has no airport shuttle. Port shuttle and cruise parking: unverified.

More picks are on my Port Canaveral and Orlando hotels page.

PortMiami: how parking and shuttles work

PortMiami is a different setup: a large port with a garage or lot for each terminal on its north and south sides. From Miami-Dade County's PortMiami pages (parking, directions & transportation):

Hotels near PortMiami

For any Miami hotel, confirm shuttle options directly with the hotel before you book.

Four Seasons Hotel Miami (Brickell). The hotel says it's 2.9 miles from PortMiami, about a 10-minute drive, and its concierge can arrange luggage storage. Confirm shuttle options directly with the hotel.

EAST Miami (Brickell City Centre). The hotel says it's 10 minutes from the cruise terminal. Confirm shuttle options directly with the hotel.

Questions I ask every hotel before I book

  1. Is the cruise shuttle free or paid, and do I need to reserve a seat?
  2. What times does it run, and how many guests and bags fit?
  3. Can I leave my car for the whole cruise? Is the lot on-site, and how tall can vehicles be?
  4. Is there an airport shuttle, or only a port shuttle?
  5. Can you store luggage after checkout?

FAQ

Do hotels near Port Canaveral offer a shuttle to the cruise port?

Many do. The port says many hotels offer complimentary or scheduled shuttles, but you arrange them with each hotel. Radisson Resort at the Port, for example, includes a port shuttle in its Park & Cruise packages. Shuttle times, seat limits and fees vary, so confirm them before booking.

Can I park at a hotel during my cruise instead of at the port?

Some hotels allow it. Radisson Resort at the Port's Park & Cruise packages include parking for one car during the cruise, and its sister hotels offer cruise parking with a shuttle. Port Canaveral's own garages are next to the terminals, and the port doesn't take parking reservations. You pay as you enter.

Is there a free shuttle at PortMiami?

PortMiami says its free shuttle runs only on cruise days. For getting from Miami International Airport, the port says most cruise lines offer a shuttle to the port. The free City of Miami Coral Way Trolley also serves the port, and taxis wait at all terminals on cruise days.

How far is Port Canaveral from the Orlando airport?

Port Canaveral says Orlando International is about 45 minutes west via SR 528, a toll road. Melbourne's airport is about 40 minutes south, and Sanford's is about an hour northwest. Traffic changes those times, so I plan for a late landing with a night near the airport or the coast.

Can I get hotel extras when I book through you?

Sometimes, depending on the hotel and your dates, but nothing is promised and it varies from stay to stay. Ask us what extras may be available when you request a quote, and I'll tell you what I find before you book. Either way, you pay the hotel's rate, with no added Book with the Captain fee.

Does it cost more to book with Book with the Captain?

No Book with the Captain fees and no markup on cruise and hotel bookings: you pay the cruise line's or hotel's rate. I may earn a commission from the supplier at no extra cost to you.
